This is it — your one final chance to enroll in 2015 coverage and avoid paying a hefty penalty next year when you file your taxes. The penalty you’ll pay next year for being uninsured this year will be $325/adult (half that amount for an uninsured child) or 2% of your taxable income — whichever is MORE. It’s Uncle Sam. What do you expect?
So if you haven’t yet enrolled in coverage, and if you have already paid or will pay a penalty for being uninsured in 2014, then you are probably eligible to enroll in affordable coverage. Because we live in South Carolina, you still have to have taxable income above 100%FPL (click here for an income chart) to qualify for affordable coverage.
During the tax penalty special enrollment period, you can enroll in an affordable plan with coverage that will take you through the rest of 2015. If you enroll on March 15, your coverage will begin April 1 as long as you pay your first insurance premium before April 1. If you enroll between March 16 and April 15, your coverage will begin on May 1. If you enroll between April 16 and April 30, Your coverage will begin on June 1.
Enrollment can be completed in three ways:
1. Online at www.HealthCare.gov
2. By phone 1-800-318-2596
3. In person. Schedule an appointment online or by phone at 1-888-998-4646.
